Today is Saraswati Puja and Vasant Panchmi

Updated: Jul 3

In keeping with Vedic Cosmology, this blog is being launched today! A day that is also the birthday of Vedic goddess Saraswati. She is considered to be the goddess of knowledge, learning, wisdom, music, and the arts. Saraswati is mentioned in Rig Veda, the earliest Veda, and is identified as the inventor of Sanskrit. She is also known as the Mother of Veda.

The Sanskrit word Saraswati is a combination of two words: Sara, which means “essence,” and Swa, which means “self.” Thus, she is the facilitator of knowledge and essential truth.

Goddess Saraswati is most commonly depicted with four arms that represent four aspects of human personality: Manas (mind), Buddhi (intellect and reasoning), Citti (imagination and creativity), and Ahamkara (ego and self-consciousness).

Saraswati holds a Mala (a rosary of crystals), a pot of sacred water, the scripts, and a Veena (a musical instrument). These items represent, respectively, the importance of meditation, purification, the Vedas, and the arts.

This day is known as Saraswati Puja (Puja means “worship”) and as Vasant Panchmi. Vasant Panchmi falls every year on the fifth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha in Sanskrit) of the lunar month of Magha, which corresponds to the Gregorian period of January to February. The Sanskrit word Vasant means “spring," (Panchami meaning the fifth day). Thus Vasant Panchmi denotes the beginning of the spring season, a time of renewal.

This time of year is marked by ripening yellow flowers of mustard crop, which are associated with goddess Saraswati’s favorite color.

As it turns out, yellow is my favorite color too - and my luckiest color, as well!

On this auspicious day, may all of us on this Earth be engaged in the pursuit of wisdom and renewal!
